Venezuela’s major food manufacturer and distributor Empresas Polar on Thursday announced that in eight days it would bring beer production to a halt due to lack of raw material. “We only have malted barley to produce (beer) until April 29 (this year),” the company reported in a communiqué.
Polar, which makes up to 80% of the country’s beer, claimed it would stop production because the government has failed to allocate foreign currency to pay out suppliers of the raw material Venezuela does not produce.
In addition, the food manufacturer said this measure would hit directly 10,000 employees of the company, in a country that has been immersed in economic recession for two years.
