The call of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro for a “citizen” constituent assembly does not seem to be a genuine effort at national reconciliation that help overcome the crisis,” said on Tuesday Michael Fitzpatrick, US Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.
The US senior officer recalled that municipal and gubernatorial elections are due in Venezuela.
“Clearly what they’ve decided to do with this constituent assembly is – they were supposed to have another round of elections this year, to say nothing of the elections that were supposed to be held last year. And what clearly the regime has decided, as I said before, is they’ve decided once again to change the rules of the game in mid-play. Things weren’t working out for them, so they’re going to try something else,” he said, as quoted by AFP .
