On Thursday, January 5, the Venezuelan Parliament, led by opposition coalition Unified Democratic Panel (MUD), designated a new board of directors for legislative year 2017, with Deputy Julio Borges, from party Primero Justicia (Justice First), as the new Congress Speaker.
The First Vice-president of the National Assembly will be deputy Freddy Guevara, member of Voluntad Popular (Peoples’ Will) party; while Deputy Dennis Fernández, of party Acción Democrática (Democratic Action), as designated as Second Vice-president.
Moreover, Stalin González, member of Un Nuevo Tiempo (A New Time) party, was named as head of the opposition group for this legislative period.
For his part, Deputy Héctor Rodríguez, head of the pro-government parliamentarian group, asserted that the new board of directors was “in contempt of court,” and urged them to abide by the rulings of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) with respect to previous parliament decisions.
