US top security adviser in the government of US President Donald Trump, Herbert Raymond "HR" McMaster, ruled out a military intervention in Venezuela.
“No, I don’t think so,” the lieutenant general responded during an interview held on Saturday when queried about a potential raid on Venezuela, AFP quoted.
The high-ranking military officer highlighted the “devastating consequences of an authoritarian dictatorship” on Venezuela, but also on regional security.
Nevertheless, he recalled that the “long history” of US intervention in Latin America has caused “troubles in the past.” In his opinion, Washington is not ready to give “this regime or any other” the golden opportunity to say, “Yankees are the source of the problem.”
“It is important for us to put the responsibility of this catastrophe on (Venezuelan President Nicolás) Maduro’s shoulders. He has caused it and he protracts it.”
Recently, the US government imposed legal and financial sanctions on Maduro, labeled as dictator for going ahead with a National Constituent Assembly.
