US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has labeled the current state of affairs in Venezuela as “a real tragedy” and reposed hope that the US administration will work on this matter with European partners.
“There are governance issues in certain countries – certainly all of you are following the situation in Venezuela; a real tragedy, but we’re hopeful that working with others, including interventions by others in Europe, that we may be able to gain some traction in Venezuela,” Tillerson told US Department of State employees.
Tillerson’s remarks were made in the middle of protests against the government of President Nicolás Maduro prompted by the president’s call for a “citizen” constituent assembly in order to rewrite the National Constitution. The move is intended to move dissenters far from power and defer the presidential election slated for 2018.
On Tuesday, the US Department of State left the door open to new sanctions against Venezuelan government officials. In addition, a group of Republican and Democrat Senators produced a bill in this regard.
