The United Nations Security Council is getting ready to hold an informal meeting on the worsening crisis in Venezuela, at the request of the United States, diplomatic sources said on Tuesday.
Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) and a trenchant critic of the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, will be among the speakers, AFP reported.
Argentinean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jorge Faurie confirmed the meeting during a conversation with reporters in New York City. He added that other guests in the meeting include the Group of Lima, composed by several Latin American nations plus Canada, which claims the UN intermediation in Venezuela.
“Venezuela is experiencing nowadays health and food emergency, and the United Nations has mechanisms available to deal with it,” Faurie said, who is accompanying Argentinean President Mauricio Macri.
President Macri and UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, met on Tuesday and had a talk on the Venezuelan ordeal.
The Argentinean foreign minister reported that the US mission at the UN proposed the meeting.
