US Senator Marco Rubio for Florida, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, on Wednesday urged President Barack Obama to apply visa bans and financial asset freezes to the head of Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) Tibisay Lucena for her alleged involvement in human rights abuses.
“The law mandates the imposition of sanctions against individuals who have committed significant acts of violence or human rights abuses,” added Rubio in a letter sent to Obama, as reported by DPA.
The referred legal instrument is the Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act, approved by the US Congress in 2014 and extended in April this year through 2019.
Rubio along with Democrat Senator Bob Menéndez, both of Cuban origin, spearheaded the initiative.
