The Venezuelan National Assembly (AN) on Tuesday passed a motion to declare the political responsibility of President Nicolás Maduro for the “serious impairment of the constitutional and democratic order, human rights violations, and devastation of social and economic foundations.”
The decision was adopted during the Parliament regular meeting, almost exclusively by the opposition parliament group.
The agreement, which was approved after 130 minutes of debate, includes requesting the Citizens’ Power to make the opposition’s move become effective. Then, the document asks the Attorney General’s Office to assess items discussed in the debate, consider a preliminary hearing on the merits of Maduro, and determine potential punishable actions.
The Parliament additionally agreed to continue with the task entrusted to a special committee on October 23 to ultimately declare abandonment of the President’s position pursuant to Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution.
