According to Marco Ruiz, the secretary general of the Venezuelan National Journalists’ Association (SNTP), growing “repression” of anti-government demonstrations by State security forces is directly proportional to the attacks on media workers.
Ruiz reported that from the start of the widespread protests in April 2017, over 115 journalists and other media workers have been assailed, adding that there is a “manifest intention” to prevent reporting the news.
During an interview with TV news show Noticiero Televen, the SNTP leader claimed that police agents approach reporters and “destroy, steal” the media equipment, or demand them to delete the news material.
