Senator Pier Ferdinando Casini, representing the Italian Parliament, expressed his support to his counterparts of the Venezuelan National Assembly (AN). He considers that the legislative body should be respected like the other public authorities.
After a meeting with his Venezuelan counterparts, Casini, President of the International Foreign Relations Commission of the Italian Republic, stated that the Italian Parliament expressly manifests its solidarity with the AN.
Casini argued that a country that does not respect its parliament does not respect the will of the people, a situation he founds very worrying when referring to the warnings of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to disregard the AN.
Venezuelan Deputy Luis Stefanelli warned that if the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) eventually designates the new legislative board of directors to take office next January 5, it would be the concretion of a dictatorship and a disrespect to the election results of last year.
Letter to the Italian Senate
During the meeting, Venezuelan Deputy William Dávila, Vice-president of the Foreign Policy Committee, announced that he gave Senator Casini a communication addressed to the Senate of the Republic of Italy.
“In that letter, we have asked the Italian Parliament for a statement of solidarity towards the Venezuelan National Assembly and we have also asked that we could visit this European nation in order to make known the institutions’ collapse and the threats we constantly face”.
