Relatives of Venezuelan-Chilean journalist Braulio Jatar on Wednesday asked the Congress Committee on Domestic Policy to include him in the list of political prisoners, arguing that the opposition political sector has raised the question of the reporter’s release in talks with the government.
In that regard, the committee promised to provide all the necessary support to free the journalist.
Jatar’s family reported irregularities in proceedings against the journalist. “In any country with legal security my husband would be at home, with his family,” stressed Silvia Martínez, Jatar’s wife, as informed by AFP.
In a communiqué, the Chilean government asked for respect of Jatar’s rights, while Venezuela, in reply, accused the South American nation of meddling.
Back on September 3 this year, Jatar was detained for alleged “extortion, fraud, money laundering, and (impairment) of the democratic and constitutional order in Venezuela, among others,” according to accusations made by the Attorney’s General Office.
