During an interview with private TV channel Globovisión, Director of the National Electoral Council (CNE) Luis Emilio Rondón underscored that this body is the only State institution authorized to set the terms for the recall vote the Venezuelan opposition has requested to put an end to President Nicolás Maduro’s term in office.
Similarly, Rondón described as “non-binding” for CNE the remarks made by political actors to set the terms to comply with the phases for such election.
The CNE director availed himself of the opportunity to state that should the different stages be completed, including technical requirements, “the recall referendum is likely to be held late in October” this year.
He recalled three phases must be completed: 1) promotion of recall vote and collection of 1% of the signatures recorded in the Electoral Registry; 2) people’s participation including gathering of 20% of signatures; 3) holding of the election and voting.
