The Brazilian police found on Monday VEF 40 million (approximately USD 4 million at the official exchange rate) in a favela of Río de Janeiro. The amount was in the hands of local smugglers, official sources reported.
Following an anonymous phone call, the local police tracked the cash inside two vehicles in Caju, a favela located in the port zone of Río de Janeiro,Efe reported.
The police headed for the site and exchanged fire with the alleged smugglers to seize the money; nobody was injured.
The banknotes, located inside suitcases, were carried to the chief police office to determine the source.
