Primaries 2012 | María Sol Pérez Schael, a sociologist and expert in politics

"The Unified Democratic Panel (MUD) is a wonder"

On December 2, it was proved that the followers of President Hugo Chávez do not always vote him and that could happen again. With the MUD and primaries, the opposition is convincing and appealing to people

Far away, in 2002, the Democratic Panel of Parties and Civil Society emerged. It was the first attempt at unifying democratic sectors under a proposal labeled by the authors of the initiative as "Foundations for an agreement on national reconstruction."

Promoters of the initiative, included, among others, María Sol Pérez Schael, a sociologist and political expert. From that proposal, she explores the process toward a consolidate unity.

Was not the group headed by atypical stockholders, such as the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Fedecámaras) and the Venezuelan Workers' Confederation (CTV) the first signal of gathering in reply to what was already regarded as an authoritarian government?

The first signal of gathering strength started with NGOs. None of them had political experience. For that reason, we approached political parties. We felt that, no matter their discredit, they should play their role accordingly. However, the events were happening too fast and citizens' anguish condensed in huge demonstrations. We gathered strength, yet without political leaders. In this context, Fedecámaras and CTV emerged. All of us know the outcome: some military men ousted Chávez and some others put him in office again. It was an arrangement between army factions and both of them used people to make up an excuse.

Later, the Democratic Coordinator (CD) came, but the setback of the 2004 recall referendum finished it off.

The referendum made a turn, both for the opposition and for Chávez. Chávez, aware of his low popularity, envisaged the danger of confronting a leader. Therefore, he created the missions (dedicated social welfare programs) and delayed the date of the referendum. The CD could not make it against it.

In 2007, the referendum on the constitutional reform was won. However, Chávez later convened an amendment and accomplished indefinite reelection. What is the use of a victory if it does yield no benefit?

The victory was bluntly ignored by the government, and this proves again that the country is under a regime that is not particularly democratic. However, thanks to (General Raúl Isaías) Baduel, perhaps, people do know that the election was won. This proves that Chávez's followers do not always vote Chávez. Therefore, they could vote another, provided they like him. It seems to me that now, with the MUD and primaries, the opposition is working on it, convincing and appealing to people.

Now, as there is chance of winning, is cementing unity more complex?

MUD is a positive evolution; I would dare say a wonder. Therefore, it should be looked after. Thus far, it has provided a platform for minimum agreements; allowing for the expression of several candidates and, above all, making possible the selection of a leader by election means.

Mafias and politics in the surroundings

Lieutenant colonel Miguel Angel Urrieta was unlucky to have his phone number on Tatiana Orozco's cell phone; who was labeled as "The Queen of the Rebar." That fact and some text messages exchanged with Orozco were enough for public prosecutors to consider him a party to the shady deals with rebar which spread over a scandal from the steel plants of Sidor.
