For the United States, opposition primaries in Venezuela are "just one step" in the democratic process that should enable Venezuelans to choose their leaders in "free and fair" ballots.
"Most importantly, Venezuelans should be given the opportunity to take part in the democratic life in Venezuela and express their opinion through free and fair elections," the US Acting Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Michael Hammer said on Monday during a press conference in reference to the election of opposition candidates for Venezuela's president, state governors and mayors.

Henrique Capriles Radonsky, the governor of north-central Miranda state, was elected on Sunday, February 12, as the challenger of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who seeks reelection next October.
