Over 8,000 Venezuelan residents in Florida voted on Sunday their candidate in the opposition primaries ahead of the election for Venezuelan president next October 7. Top leaders in the US-Cuban community based in Miami backed he unprecedented event.

During the election day in Miami, which hosts the biggest balloting station outside Venezuela with 18,000 enrolled voters, TV stars showed up, in addition to several ex managers of state-run oil holding Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) who led a nationwide oil strike in December 2002-February 2003, retired military officers and residents in South Florida.

Alexis Ortiz, the head of the Electoral Committee of the opposition Unified Democratic Panel in Miami, reported a massive, smooth event which ended at 5:00 p.m. local time.
