Pablo Iglesias, the leader of Spanish political party Podemos, believes that the request for help made by Lilian Tintori, the wife of detained Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López, could be a political maneuver to harm the new Spanish leftist political organization.

"I believe the aim of that request is to harm Podemos," Iglesias said in a radio interview with Cadena Ser. He also commented in another TV interview on Sunday that Tintori could have been manipulated, DPA reported.

Venezuela is a sensitive issue for Iglesias and his party. The Political Science professor has been widely criticized in Spain for supporting the governments of late President Hugo Chávez and current President Nicolás Maduro.

"We will schedule a meeting with that lady and we will do as much as we can," stated Iglesias, who was proclaimed on Saturday as Secretary General of Podemos, with 90% support.

Tintori had asked Iglesias to act as a mediator for the release of her husband. Iglesias asked her, through his delegation at the European Parliament, to send him all the available information to study the case.
