Socialist International to hear more reports on Venezuela

Mission of Venezuelan opposition parties claim democratic deficit

Within the framework of the Council meeting of the Socialist International (SI) opened on June 30 in Mexico City, a mission of Venezuelan parties, members of the Socialist International –Acción Democrática, Un Nuevo Tiempo, Movimiento al Socialismo– is to voice for another year concerns about democratic restrictions in Venezuela, and the holding of political prisoners in the country.

During the meeting, SI Secretary General Luis Ayala regretted the little progress made during the Venezuelan government-opposition talks, and referred to the imprisonment of political leaders and the anti-government protests reported in Venezuela. Ayala lambasted the Venezuelan justice. The judiciary, he said, "has failed to act like in other Latin American countries and the State has failed to play such a role to avoid future events," Mexican daily newspaper Excelsior reported on its website.
