Amnesty International hopes not to see events similar to those of Feb. 12

In a statement, the human rights advocate stressed the importance of observing law, civil rights and liberties, and the right to information during both the march slated for Tuesday and subsequent demonstrations. Non-Governmental Organization Amnesty International has urged Venezuelan authorities to enforce law and order, and also to ensure human rights of those willing to take part in Tuesday's demonstrations. The NGO also encouraged demonstrators to peacefully exercise their rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly.

Amnesty International regarded as a positive step President Nicolás Maduro's rejection of violence by pro-Government armed groups, and his commitment to disarm them. The NGO also applauded calls from the opposition for peaceful demonstrations.

In light of the demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday, Amnesty International hopes that the messages of the Venezuelan president and opposition leaders serve to avoid similar events to those of February 12.
