Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro reported on Monday that five people were captured in Caracas after finding misappropriation of USD 84 million from the Chinese-Venezuelan Fund through the Economic and Social Development Fund of Venezuela (Bandes).

"We will give another surprise like this the current week (...) Either corruption or homeland," the president said during an event in Amazonas state.

Maduro ordered the army to take part in anti-corruption efforts.

This is the second event of misdoings in past months involving Bandes officials. Earlier, the US judiciary found blackmail between a US brokerage firm and former deputy chief financial officer of the state bank, María de los Ángeles González.

The president gave no further details about the alleged embezzlement in the bilateral fund.

Last week, an anti-corruption secret agency led by the very President Maduro was established.
