The US Government expressed on Monday that an audit of the results of the polls for Venezuelan president is "prudent and necessary." As a result of the election, government candidate Nicolás Maduro won by a stretched out margin over challenger Henrique Capriles Radonski.

An audit, required by Capriles Radonski and agreed by Maduro himself, is a "significant, prudent and necessary step," Jay Carney, the White House spokesman told reporters, AFP quoted.

"We congratulate the people of Venezuela for their turnout," Carney said as part of the US Government first reaction to the Venezuelan election, Efe added.
