Vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nicolás Maduro will attend the summit of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), in Lima, Peru
In light of his attendance at the summit of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), Venezuelan Vice-Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nicolás Maduro selected Minister of Electric Power Héctor Navarro as the acting Vice-President. Navarro will stand in for Maduro from November 30 through December 1.
The appointment is certified in the Official Gazette 40,061, dated November 29, 2012.
Maduro is heading for Lima, Peru, where the 6th Regular Meeting of Heads of State and Governmen of Unasur will take place.
The news marked an ominous beginning, health-wise, of the year 2015: the Cardiovascular Surgery Unit at Hospital Clínico Universitario, one of the country's largest teaching hospitals, was to close completely on January 5 due to lack of medicines and surgical supplies. All patients who were waiting to be operated on were sent home. More than 10 patients waiting for surgery reportedly died there from lack of basic medical supplies in the two months prior to the closure.
