European Union asks Chávez "to offer a hand to all Venezuelans"
The representative of the European Union, Catherine Ashton, asked the Venezuelan president to foster fundamental liberties
"I have taken note of Hugo Chávez's victory in the presidential election and I would like to congratulate him for his reelection," Ashton said in a press release, AFP quoted.
"Responsibility comes along with victory," she added.
"In his new term in office, President Chávez should offer a hand to all the sectors of the Venezuelan society to enhance the country institutions and promote fundamental liberties," she recommended.
The very early morning after the presidential election (April 15), both candidates requested the National Electoral Council (CNE) to conduct a full audit of the process: one, Henrique Capriles, because he asserts that the election results are different from the ones announced, and the other one, Nicolás Maduro, in order to clear any doubt regarding his victory, and to reinforce his political stance. Nevertheless, as it is already known, President Maduro changed his mind.
