Hundred Venezuelan prisoners on hunger strike
A total of 600 prisoners have joined the strike
Upon notification to the authorities, they were sent back to their cells and after shutting the gates, water and light were cut.
The strike is against the ongoing transfer of inmates. Some 200 prisoners have been taken to other penitentiaries so far this year. It is believed those who have been transferred had complained about different irregularities within the system or had spoken to the press.
José Vicente Rangel clearly said: "We are not conducting negotiations threatened with a gun in the head." He warned behind closed doors in the midst of the social upheaval occurred during the oil strike in 2002 and 2003. Dissenting Timoteo Zambrano answered back that no other option was available: "The thing is that otherwise, you do not negotiate."
