According to unofficial reports, at least 17 police officers out of the 40 police agents who have been allegedly killed in 2012 in Caracas Metropolitan Area were murdered to steal their guns.

The latest case occurred last week when Junior Elías López, a police officer of El Hatillo municipality, was killed during a robbery in the area of Lomas de Baruta at 11 p.m. on Saturday by a group of criminals. The police agent was shot to death and the criminals stole his gun.

At least 12 out of the 17 murders of policemen occurred after the ban to sell weapons ordered by a joint resolution of the Ministries of Interior and Justice and Defense, dated February 29.
