Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez said that the events of April 11, 2002 were a test for the Venezuelan people.

President Hugo Chávez praised the Venezuelan people in a message posted on his Twitter account. "April 11th (2002) was a huge test for the Venezuelan people. You are a blessed people. We shall live, we shall prevail,!" the message read.

The Venezuelan Head of State is in Havana, Cuba, since last Saturday for a third round of radiation therapy, as part of a treatment against cancer.

Chávez is expected to return to Caracas on Thursday or Friday to participate in the acts to commemorate the events of April 2002.

Vice-President Elías Jaua headed an event in the city of Los Teques, central Miranda state, to commemorate the violent actions, while the speaker of the National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, led a ceremony at the Teresa Carreño Theater in Caracas. Cabello questioned the role of the media during the events of April 11, 2002. "While they celebrated the coup, people called for Chávez," the Venezuelan deputy said.
