Former Venezuelan consul to Miami seeks asylum in the US
Andreína Savelli Castillo, a former diplomatic official, cited political persecution by Hugo Chávez s government
Andreína Savelli Castillo worked for 17 years at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and she is seeking asylum in the United States since late 2011.
The US newspaper Miami El Faro interviewed the former diplomat and Savelli confirmed her application for asylum in the United States, but she did not provide the reasons for her decision.
Savelli Castillo, 38, was a Venezuelan consul in Puerto Rico in 2000 and in March 2005 was appointed as the head of the Western Europe department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Three months later she was appointed Chargé d'Affaires ad Interim in the Venezuelan Embassy to Romania.
Savelli worked in Venezuela's Foreign Ministry from December 1993 to December 2010, when he left office.
In September 2011, she sought asylum in the United States citing political persecution.
Although she was also a consul to the US, Savelli's case of does not appear to relate to the situation of the Venezuelan consulate to Miami, which was shut down by the Venezuelan government following the expulsion of Consul Livia Acosta.
According to a documentary entitled "The Iranian Threat," produced and broadcast by Univision network, Acosta participated in several meetings in Mexico in which an alleged plot to launch cyber-attacks on computer systems of the US government was planned.
