A chronology of accidents in the Venezuelan oil industry during 2012
This year, more than 30 accidents have lambasted the oil industry operations
January 05, 2012. Oil-sector workers at refinery El Palito asserted that the Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) unit stopped due to the deficient maintenance works previously conducted.
January 07, 2012. A blast was reported in the refinery Cardón.
January 08, 2012. Electrical failures affected the operating capacity of refinery Cardón.
January 08, 2012. A preventive stopping of the naphtha reforming unit of refinery Cardón was reported by Pdvsa.
January 10, 2012. Oil-sector workers reported on failures in the distillation unit of refinery Amuay.
January 13, 2012. A deceased and nine injured people was the result of a craft sinking in Zulia state (northwest Venezuela).
January 14, 2012. Two workers died and 22 were injured after the crash of a truck into a bus that transported Pdvsa workers from Zulia state to Caracas to attend a presidential act.
January 17, 2012. A Pdvsa oil drill blasted in the Punta de Mata management (Monagas state, Venezuela's northeast), without injured or wounded people recorded.
January 21, 2012. Oil- sector workers of Paraguaná Refining Complex voiced disatisfaction with the lack of personal and industrial security.
January 21, 2012. Paraguaná refineries worked at 63% of their operating capacity.
January 22, 2012. Refinery Amuay distillation unit was reactivated.
January 26, 2012. Pdvsa asserted that Paraguaná Refining Complex worked at 79% of its total operating capacity.
January 31, 2012. A major programmed maintenance in the catalytic unit of refinery Amuay began.
February 04, 2012. A contingency plan in the Jusepín Monagas Complex (Monagas state) was activated to fix a crack in the crude oil pipeline.
February 06, 2012. An accident in refinery Cardón was recorded when a failure in the submersible pump of the plant DC-4 (atmospheric distillation) sparked a fire.
February 06, 2012. A broken oil pipeline caused water in short supply in Monagas state, as well as a crude oil spill.
February 8, 2012. Pdvsa conducted some investigations due to a blast in the welding workshop of its subsidiary company National Transportation Enterprise, in the Southeast Region; a worker died.
February 21, 2012. A failure stopped the catalytic unit of refinery Cardón.
February 22, 2012. Lack of spare parts affected operations in the refineries.
February 27, 2012. There were warnings about the deterioration of refinery El Palito (in Carabobo state). Pdvsa confirmed crude oil spill in Guanipa River in Anzoátegui state (northeast of the country).
February 02, 2012. The processing plant was stopped in refinery El Palito.
February 03, 2012. Spill of 100 oil barrels was reported. It was caused by a vessel from Bahamas that was at 1 nm from the docks of the José Cryogenic Complex.
February 09, 2012. At 8:30 p.m., a failure in the Cardón air instrument system occurred. This caused a refinery preventive stopping.
March 11, 2012.Technical failures affected refineries of Falcón and Anzoátegui states.
April 01, 2012. Three people were injured and one died due to a blast in the main station of Petrocedeño in San Diego de Cabrutica, in Anzoátegui state.
April 26, 2012. The catalytic still in the refinery Amuay was reactivated.
April 27, 2012. The catalytic cracker stopped again in Amuay.
April 28, 2012. A Pdvsa worker died and three were injured in an accident in Lake Maracaibo.
May 06, 2012. A contingency plan was activated after a crude oil spill in Anzoátegui state.
May 08, 2012. A crude oil spill occurred in Miranda town council, Anzoátegui state, where Petropiar is located.
May 10, 2012. A products pipeline break disrupted the diesel line in Monagas state.
May 23, 2012. The lubricating plant would stop for three months.
May 28, 2012. Yare oil tanker, run by Pdvsa and recently delivered by Japan, had to be attended in a Bahamas dockyard, due to a break in the hull.
June 03, 2012. A fire was recorded in the well CM-26 in Zulia State. Three people were injured and one died.
June 07, 2012. A Pdvsa truck, loaded with liquefied gas, knocked over the Main 9 (on the way to east Venezuela).
June 24, 2012. Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) unit of refinery El Palito, Carabobo state, entered its pre-startup phase on July 26, after a programmed stopping of 20 days.
June 28, 2012. Refinery Amuay came to a standstill due to a failure in the cooling system.
July 04, 2012. Petropiar heavy crude oil upgrader, run by Pdvsa and Chevron, would not operate for 46 days for the purpose of maintenance and in order to increase its processing capacity at 17% to 210,000 barrels per day.
July 26, 2012. Pdvsa confirmed a fire on July 25 in the facilities of the Petropiar heavy crude oil upgrader in Anzoátegui.
August 05, 2012. A minor fire was recorded in Cardón refinery.
August 25, 2012. A blast in refinery Amuay killed 26 people and injured 80.
September 19, 2012. During an electrical storm, a lightning set fire to two tanks at El Palito refinery, in north central Carabobo state.
José Vicente Rangel clearly said: "We are not conducting negotiations threatened with a gun in the head." He warned behind closed doors in the midst of the social upheaval occurred during the oil strike in 2002 and 2003. Dissenting Timoteo Zambrano answered back that no other option was available: "The thing is that otherwise, you do not negotiate."
