A fire was reported on Sunday night at the CD-4 unit (Alkylation plant) of the Cardón refinery, Paraguaná refining complex (CRP) in Falcón state, northwestern Venezuela. Sources said that it was a "considerable" fire.

Even though authorities have not disclosed details, the fire started after a failure in a submersible pump.

The fire started at 8:30 p.m. local time and two hours later, fire department officers were still working to control the fire.

The implications of the accident in the production of the refinery are not known. The CRP has been hit by several accidents in the past few months.
