Cuba's trade with Venezuela almost doubled in 2010 to USD 6 billion, while food purchases from the United States continued to decline, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The agency said that trade with Venezuela in 2010 was USD 6.02 billion, over USD 3.38 billion reported in 2009, an increase of 78%.

The report should have been released throughout 2011, as the figures are usually published at the end of the corresponding year, AP reported.

Venezuela has gradually become Cuba's top trading partner since President Hugo Chávez took office in 2000 and strengthened his alliance with his then colleague Fidel Castro. Venezuela has extensive agreements with the island under which Caracas provides oil at preferential prices, while Cuba sends doctors and technicians for Venezuela's welfare programs.

Lieutenant colonel Miguel Angel Urrieta was unlucky to have his phone number on Tatiana Orozco's cell phone; who was labeled as "The Queen of the Rebar." That fact and some text messages exchanged with Orozco were enough for public prosecutors to consider him a party to the shady deals with rebar which spread over a scandal from the steel plants of Sidor.
