The King of Rock and Roll dies

Tears, shock and pain. The music world suffered the loss of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley.

On August 16, 1977, he was found dead at his home, Graceland. In the 50's he had single-handedly changed the way people looked at, listened to and danced rock music. Though speculations rose indicating that the cause of death was a barbiturate and cocaine overdoes, forensic reports stated that a heart attack put an end to the singer's life.

With thick black hair, an unusual vocal style, guitar in hand, bad boy look and suggestive hip movements, he reached the top of the music charts in 1956 with Heartbreak Hotel.

Whenever Tutti Frutti or Jailhouse Rock were played, girls went delirious over "The King," and men dedicated to them songs like A Little Less Conversation, which brought about a musical and sexual revolution.

In Las Vegas he sold out even the last of his shows, which immortalized the white outfit with bell bottoms, rhinestones and glitter.

An idol to the masses had succumbed to the excesses of fame, indulging deep in drugs and losing the figure that drove girls insane.

His marriage had fallen apart, yet he never stopped attracting audiences. Even in death, Presley was involved in a mass spectacle as over 100,000 mourners were present at his burial in Memphis, Tennessee.

The death of The Pelvis, a name given to the singer by many of his fans, was not the only controversial event in August. The US Congress approved the use of the neutron bomb, a weapon capable of killing people without hurting the environment. Defenders of the weapon in Congress said that the bomb was "more human" because its shockwave does not cause damage. An arsenal of these upgraded atomic bombs was sent to US forces in Europe.

On one side of the globe, the United States reinforced its military fleet  and, on the other, in Israel, an agreement was reached putting an end to the armed conflict between Israel and Egypt. Anwar Sadat, Egyptian president, and Menachem Begin, Israeli prime minister, decided that four wars in thirty years had been enough. The events were seen as a great accomplishment and ended with recognition of Israel's sovereignty.

It was a year of surprises, and the movie industry would not be left behind. Rocky, a film about a journeyman boxer portrayed by Sylvester Stallone, an unknown actor, would leave in people's minds the triumphant final scene on the stairs of Washington and would ultimately win three Oscars for best director, picture and film editing.

Venezuela's Navegantes del Magallanes managed to earn a place in the Baseball Caribbean Series, but lost in spite of playing as home team.
