“We respect and love the Jewish people,” said Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez during a visit to the International Tourism Fair (Fitven) and a day after former Cuban President Fidel Castro asked Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to “stop slandering the Jews”
President Hugo Chávez said on Wednesday that he would meet soon with the Jewish community in Venezuela, a day after former Cuban President Fidel Castro called upon Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to "stop slandering the Jews."
While making the announcement, the Venezuelan president did not refer specifically to Castro or Ahmadinejad, whom Chávez views as "my father and brother," respectively. However, he said that Argentine President Cristina Fernández had told him that she was pleased about the meeting, Efe reported.
"We respect and love the Jewish people," said Chávez during a visit to the International Tourism Fair (Fitven) in Caracas.
"Some people have tried to wage a campaign saying that I am anti-Jewish, and enemy of the Jews (...); in fact, we respect and love the Jewish people," Chávez said.
