Suspected member of ETA detained in Lisbon, trying to head for Venezuela

Politics
Andoni Cengotitabengoa, a suspected member of the Basque terrorist group País Vasco y Libertad (ETA), was detained on Thursday night at Lisbon airport. He had a forged Mexican passport and a ticket to travel to Venezuela, counter-terrorism officials said.

The suspected member of ETA was captured by the Portuguese police and was identified along with his partner Oier Gómez Mielgo, as one of the occupants of a house located near the Portuguese town of Óbidos, where the police found ETA explosives in a February raid.

Cengotitabengoa, who was born in the Basque city of Bilbao in 1979, was identified by surveillance cameras at a supermarket where the suspected ETA member went to buy some goods. He is included in the list of most wanted terrorists issued by the Spanish Civil Guard.

The ETA suspect was on the run since 2003. He has already been sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison for street violence.
