Venezuela on Tuesday rejected as "infamy" the US claims that Venezuela fails to cooperate in the fight against drugs, following publication of a report stating that Venezuelan agents are providing assistance to Colombian guerrillas linked to drug trafficking .

"Venezuela, exercising its full sovereignty, categorically rejects the slander and lies supported by the US government, which continues to accuse the Venezuelan government of failing to cooperate against drug trafficking," reads the communiqué issued by the Ministry of the Interior and Justice, AFP reported .

"The negative assessments related to some Venezuelan state institutions are unacceptable, as the US administration does not disclose the sources, and yet disseminates rates and trends, based on falsehood and manipulation," the text continues.

The United States said on Monday in its annual report that Venezuelan agents are providing assistance directly to Colombian guerrilla groups linked to drug traffickers.

In addition, the State Department report stated that during 2009 the government of President Hugo Chávez "failed to cooperate consistently with the United States and other countries to reduce the flow of cocaine through Venezuela."

From Montevideo, where he was paying a visit, President Hugo Chávez emphatically denied this report.

The Venezuelan interior and justice ministry said in a statement that during 2009, the country seized over 60 tons of drugs and arrested 14 leaders of organizations linked to drug trafficking, four of which were handed over to US authorities.
