Chávez pulls out of Unasur summit because of domestic issues

Western Hemisphere
Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez cancelled his visit to Ecuador to participate in the extraordinary meeting of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), which will be held in Quito to coordinate regional aid for Haiti following a devastating earthquake.

A source of the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry told Efe that Chávez would not attend the Unasur summit on Haiti because he considers that he must remain in Venezuela right now.

"President Chávez considered that his presence in Venezuela (at this time) was important and resolved to commission his Foreign Minister (Nicolás) Maduro," the source said.

Bolivian President Evo Morales also cancelled his participation in the meeting on Tuesday. The Bolivian President's office has not provided any reasons for the action.

The Presidents of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe and Peru, Alan García, have not arrived yet.
