The French Foreign Ministry refused to comment on President Hugo Chávez's statements on Friday saying that the Venezuelan terrorist Carlos Ilich Ramírez Sánchez (the Jackal) was "wrongfully convicted" in France.
"Ilich Ramírez Sánchez has been sentenced to life and is currently serving his sentence in France. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no comment on judicial decisions," said a spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry," as reported by AFP.
Chávez said on Friday in an international meeting of leftist political parties that the French police "abducted" Ilich Ramírez. "They kidnapped Carlos in Sudan. They put him in a sack and took him to Paris."
"Carlos Ilich Ramírez Sánchez was a revolutionary fighter," Chávez added.
