The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, on Wednesday voiced his concern about the hunger strike held by Venezuelan students and urged the Caracas government to authorize the visit of the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to the country.

Insulza told Efe that he is "worried" about the hunger strike staged by dozens of dissident university students.

"I am worried. It really worries me to have 160 young people outside OAS headquarters in Caracas," said Insulza.

The hunger strike began last Friday; the students are requesting the IACHR to visit Venezuela in order to monitor government actions against political dissenters.

The OAS Secretary General underscored that he agrees to a visit by the IACHR to Venezuela, but explained that the Commission has requested to visit the country several times and the government of President Hugo Chávez has refused it.
