Opposition panel condemns coup in Honduras; asks for proactivity from OAS

Western Hemisphere
The opposition Unified Panel on Monday issued a press communiqué "strongly" rejecting the events that took place in the last few days in Honduras, both the disregard of the Honduran Constitution by ousted President Manuel Zelaya and the military coup.

"No one, regardless of his political and social position, can be above the Constitution. In this regard, we reprove both the attitude of President Zelaya, who, acting as a caudillo, violated the Honduran rule of law, and the military actions carried out as of the early hours of yesterday (Sunday) that led to the breaking of the constitutional thread," read the press release.

Likewise, the opposition panel requested action from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the international community in order to find a solution for Honduras.

"We demand that freedom of expression and information be fully restored, as well as right to life and other human rights for all the Honduran people, especially for those who, exerting their right to demonstrate in the streets, express their rejection of what is happening there," said the Unified Panel.
