The exchange of ambassadors benefits the United States as well as Venezuela, said on Wednesday State Department spokesman Ian Kelly following the announcement made in Caracas that the two countries are preparing to resume diplomatic ties.

"We are currently taking the necessary measures to accomplish the goal of returning ambassadors and we consider that the exchange of ambassador works for the benefit of the two countries," Kelly said in a press meeting, AFP reported.

The spokesman refused to confirm whether ambassadors working before the crisis would be reinstated to the respective country, or whether the decision would be taken in the short term.

Venezuela's Foreign Minister Nicolás Maduro had said earlier that the South American country will reinstate in the coming days Bernardo Álvarez as its ambassador to the US whereas the United States will restore Patrick Duddy as his diplomatic envoy in Venezuela.
