The Minister of Health, Jesús Mantilla, said late on Sunday to the state-run network Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) that there are 12 confirmed cases of AH1N1 in Venezuela. Apart from the four patients detected last week, in the central state of Miranda and a passenger coming from Brazil, there are other three infected people in the eastern states of Bolívar and Anzoátegui.
The number of infected patients has already reached 12, but the situation of the remaining five patients was not detailed by the top health official, in terms of their profiles and the geographical location of the cases.
In Ciudad Bolívar, the capital of the state of Bolívar, south Venezuela, a two year-old girl, who recently returned with her parents from the United States, became the first confirmed case in the state of Bolívar.
The President of the Institute of Public Health (ISP), Ana Gineth Morales, reported the case. She also said: "The girl is in isolation."
They entered the country last May 31 and, three days later, she began to have flu symptoms. "Her family reported the case, and health experts were sent to the home of the patient, took a sample and sent it to the National Hygiene Institute Rafael Rangel (INH), to be analyzed.
Each suspected case is isolated and the patient is treated with oseltamivir phosphate.
Situation in the state of Anzoátegui
In the city of Puerto La Cruz, state of Anzoátegui, northeast Venezuela, there are two confirmed cases of A H1N1, according a report provided by the governor, Tarek William Saab. He said late on Sunday that the infected people are under strict medical supervision. Saab said that they were allegedly infected by a person coming from Panamá and they are members of a family."
The cases were detected by the authorities of Urbaneja municipality, at the Municipal Hospital of Lechería. According to reports provided by this institution, the infected persons were two women: a teenager and a 20-year old woman. The authorities have contacted the passengers who took the same flight and ground connections.
