The Vice President of Peru, Vice Admiral Luis Giampietri, said on Tuesday in Beijing that the asylum granted to Manuel Rosales is part of "an old tradition."
"It is not the first time that Peru grants asylum to a person," Giampietri, who attended on Tuesday the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Peru together with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, told Efe.
"If we go back to tradition, Peru has always been faithful to grant asylum whenever it deems it appropriate," said the Vice President. Giampietri is on a work visit to China until May 2nd.
Giampietri avoided elaborating on the issue and referred the matter to the Peruvian Foreign Ministry and President Alan García.
The Venezuelan government announced an "overall revision" of its relations with Peru in protest at Lima's decision to grant political asylum to opposition leader Manuel Rosales, accused of alleged corruption by the Venezuelan judiciary.
