Peruvian President Alan García said on Tuesday that a political asylum granted to Venezuelan opposition leader Manuel Rosales, sued for alleged corruption in Venezuela, "will not disturb" the bilateral relations.
"We have a position of friendship with the Venezuelan government and this decision will not disturb the ties with that country," said García in Río Branco, during a press conference following his meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Efe reported.
"The primary obligation" of a government is "to give shelter to whomever feeling threatened," noted the Peruvian head of state. For this reason, Rosales was granted asylum.
García believes that such obligation could not be fulfilled "without entailing troubles."
The mayor of Maracaibo, the capital city of western Zulia state, arrived in Peru last week as a tourist and some days later, he applied for political asylum, for considering that the judicial proceeding against him was initiated for political reasons.
