Attorney General Office subpoenas ex Caracas mayor as a defendant

The Attorney General Office subpoenaed Juan Barreto Cipriani, former Caracas Metropolitan Mayor and member of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), as a defendant, for allegedly being involved in corruption crimes during his administration in the metropolitan mayor's office.

"The 53rd and 68th public prosecutors of Caracas metropolitan area, Ana Isabel Hernández and Emylce Ramos Julio, respectively, subpoenaed former mayor Barreto for Wednesday, April 29, at 10:00 a.m., according to a press release issued by the Attorney General Office.

The statement says that Barreto "has all the rights provided in Article 49 of the Venezuelan Constitution and the rights provided in Articles 124, 125, 130 and 131 of the Organic Code of Criminal Procedure (COPP), which allow him to request and produce evidence and proceedings."

On November 12, 2007, the Attorney General Office launched an investigation into alleged administrative irregularities related with the award and execution of the projects "Air Surveillance System for the Metropolitan Area of Caracas" and "Proposal for an information LED Display for the Metropolitan District of Caracas."
