Intelligence agents detain ex Defense Minister

His lawyer fears for Baduel's life; will seek an explanation for the move

Politics
Raúl Isaías Baduel, Venezuela's former Defense Minister, was arrested by members of the Military Intelligence Directorate (DIM), said Cruz María de Baduel, the wife of General Baduel.

Baduel's attorney Omar Mora Tosta confirmed the news and said that the agents stormed into the residence of the former minister and took him without a bench warrant.

"They took him violently, aiming their guns at Baduel and his family. We do not understand the reason for this situation, because he has appeared in court whenever he has been summoned as part of a trial against him, full of arbitrary and illegal situation. This situation took us unawares."

The lawyer reported that he would go to the military courts in order to check what had happened and ascertain whether there was an arrest warrant.

"We are surprised by this situation; we expect that it will be not an epidemic of abuses of the constitutional rights of people facing trial with the Venezuelan state as the plaintiff, because this is seemingly the case."

Mora Tosta added that he feared for the ex minister's life.
