Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Greece's Vice minister of Foreign Affairs, has lodged a formal protest in Athens with Venezuelan ambassador Rodrigo Chávez for the treatment given to two Greek sailors who were arrested five months ago in the city of Puerto La Cruz (east Venezuela), after drugs were seized on their boat.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Greece criticized the Venezuelan authorities for "not observing the rules of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with respect to the fair treatment to sailors," since they have been arrested "on charges that have not been clearly defined."
The Greek government asked the Venezuelan authorities to settle the case, as soon as possible, and to improve the detention conditions of the two sailors," EFE reported.
