Colombia's President Álvaro Uribe congratulated Monday
his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chávez on his "democratic
victory" in the referendum held on Sunday that allowed indefinite
reelection of all elected officials in Venezuela, including
the president.
During a talk with businessmen in Sao Paulo, Uribe was asked
about Chávez's victory and whether he considered that
it was a risk for democracy. The Colombian ruler replied that
his answer would be "positive," AFP reported.
"I will respond in a positive manner with a feeling of brotherhood
with the people of Venezuela. I want to congratulate publicly
President Chávez on this democratic victory. I also want
to hail the Venezuelan people for having participated in a
democratic referendum," Uribe said.
10:07 AM. DIPLOMACY. Admired by the Colombian guerrilla after his coup attempt in 1992, the then lieutenant colonel Hugo Chávez Frías received financial support by the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) for his projects after his capture that year. This mostly explains the relationship and "debt" between the parties, as revealed by a paper of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) of the United Kingdom.
