Heavy rains kill nine people in Venezuela

The death of a 15-year-old boy raised to nine the number of fatal victims due to the torrential rains that fell in Venezuela last Thursday.

The news was confirmed on Friday by Venezuelan Interior and Justice Minister Tarek El Aissami, who visited El Valle sector, one of the worse hit areas in Caracas, reported state news agency ABN.

El Aissami said that about 70 families would be evacuated from El Valle, after the same number of homes totally or partially collapsed.

Other three Caracas municipalities were also affected on Thursday night due to heavy rains that fell during six hours from 4:00 p.m. In Santa Cruz del Este and La Limonera sectors of Baruta municipality, the authorities were alert due to the severity of landslides and other damages.

The states of Yaracuy, Mérida and Zulia were also hit.

The authorities of Baruta and Libertador municipalities implemented special plans to address the emergency problems.

The Guaire river (70 km), which crosses the Venezuelan capital from west to east received sewage and runoff, overflowed for a few minutes at Los Ruices sector.
