President of Chile Michelle Bachelet is trying to reconcile
the positions adopted by the Presidents of Venezuela, Hugo
Chávez, and Brazil, Lula da Silva, regarding the political
crisis in Bolivia, according to official sources quoted on
Monday by Chilean newspaper El Mercurio.
Based on the report, the proposal that will be discussed
by the leaders of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur)
will be not to intervene in the internal affairs of Bolivia
and not to mention the United States.
The Chilean head of state and President "pro tempore" of
Unasur, has called for an emergency summit on the South American
leaders on Monday to find a solution to the Bolivian crisis
and to express institutional support to President Evo Morales.
But not all the leaders share the same opinion about what
should be the role of the South American countries, since
President Hugo Chávez promotes an active presence, even
militarily, to support the Bolivian government whereas the
president of Brazil has a more moderate stance.
10:07 AM. DIPLOMACY. Admired by the Colombian guerrilla after his coup attempt in 1992, the then lieutenant colonel Hugo Chávez Frías received financial support by the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) for his projects after his capture that year. This mostly explains the relationship and "debt" between the parties, as revealed by a paper of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) of the United Kingdom.
