Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez sent his condolences to the Spanish people and government over a Gran Canaria-bound Spanair jet crashed on Wednesday, which left 153 people dead.

"In this tragic moment, Venezuelans express our solidarity and fraternity to relatives and friends of the victims of such terrible disaster," read a communiqué released by the President's Office in Caracas, as quoted by AFP.
