Amnesty International (AI) presented a report on Wednesday related to violence against women in Venezuela. AI calls for enforcing a recent law that punishes men indicted for crimes related to physical or verbal violence against women.

Guadalupe Marengo, the Deputy Secretary of AI’s International Secretariat, said that violence against women is as serious in Venezuela as it is in the rest of the world. The AI officer also said that the answer to this problem is to enforce the law passed last year in Venezuela, DPA reported.

“The law has already been adopted. Now, Venezuelan authorities must enforce it,” Ms. Marengo said when presenting the report in Caracas.

The Mexican specialist said that according to UN figures, only one in three women suffering abuse from their partners filed a complaint. According to the aforementioned law, all complaints are processed and both local and regional authorities are required to monitor the cases of violence against women.
